The Ultimate Road Trip Through New Zealand’s North Island

Revel in a 10-day North Island adventure that blends sightseeing with cultural outings, including visits to the Hobbiton™ Movie Set & glow-worm caves, a dolphin watching cruise, a vintage train ride & so much more.

About Your Trip

Don’t forget your camera! You’ll want to capture every moment in New Zealand as you traverse the North Island — a landscape of incomparable beauty and fascinating culture.

Starting in Auckland, you’ll venture south for a tour of "middle earth" at Hobbiton Movie Set, the filming location for several blockbusters including “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” Continue to a forest park known for exotic tree species — including Californian coast redwoods — and then to a quaint city park on Lake Rotorua. Later, you’ll get superb views of the lake and city from way up high in a gondola.

Farther southwest at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, marvel at otherworldly geothermic elements that have been shaped by volcanic activity over thousands of years. You’ll visit Huka Falls next as you head toward Lake Taupo — there, you’ll have time on your own to explore the spectacular scenery. Before returning to Auckland, you’ll enjoy an amazing guided tour of the mysterious Waitomo Glowworm Caves® — 2 levels of caverns lit by tiny glow worms — and marvel at formations like the Catacombs, the Pipe Organ and the Banquet Chamber. Your final tour stop is at Hamilton Gardens, a public park on the Waikato River.

Then, you’ll journey northward with a special stop at The Kauri Museum to learn about pioneering days in the area. Another outing brings you to the museum at Waitangi Treaty Grounds that’s dedicated to Maori history and culture. While still in Paihia, you’ll also embark on a dolphin-watching cruise around the Bay of Islands and past the famous Hole in the Rock before docking in Russell, a small town full of history as the country’s first capital. On your way back to Auckland, you’ll ride a vintage steam train around the picturesque countryside then visit the scenic Whangarei Falls.

What we love:
• The tallest Californian coast redwood tree in Whakarewarewa Forest stands at 236 feet (72 meters) high and is 66 inches (169 centimeters) in diameter.
• You’re sure to be mesmerized at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland — the country’s most colorful geothermal attraction boasts dramatic displays of rising sulfurous steam, spouting geysers and bubbling streams.
• Hamilton Gardens features themed areas, including the English Flower Garden and the Japanese Garden of Contemplation.
• While in Russell, be sure to stop at the Duke of Marlborough Tavern, New Zealand’s oldest licensed pub.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

This trip will close by February 29.
